Inaugural Crosscountrysquared Duathalon

I have my eye on my first tri at the end of August. Until then, I thought I'd host my very own duathalon on Sunday. Guess what? I won!

1/1 Overall
1/1 Female
1/1 Age group

Holla! I'm sure my neighbors appreciated the awards ceremony I conducted in my front yard with the kitchen step-stool podium. The megaphone I used to announce my own name may have been over the top, but hey, I don't judge your dirty kids and mangy dogs running through my yard, don't judge the medal, ribbon, and trophy I presented to myself.

I didn't intend to make it a duathalon, but that's what beautiful weather and a day with no agenda brings. My plan was to run and ride and see how I felt after that.

I ate breakfast (not nearly enough I'd later learn), and started with a good 4 mile run. It was cloudy and calm. A very nice contrast to the hot and steamy weather of late. It's felt like you're blow drying yourself in the face. While standing in a sauna. While wearing a cotton batting suit.

After the run, I took about 3 minutes to quickly swapped out the shorts, grab some water, and gear up for the bike. My quads were a little questionable up the first hill, but the breeze felt great. 26 miles later, I pulled into the driveway tired, thirsty, and hungry, but pretty pleased with myself for the new distance PR.

I gave myself 5 minutes to swap out shorts again and hydrate. The Husband had just started grilling himself some lunch, so I joined him outside to sip Gatorade and re-gear. Perched on the banister felt pretty great.

Me: Sigh, I don't want to get up, but I told myself I'd run at least 2 miles afterwards.
The Husband: You should go then. 2 miles isn't THAT far.

Oooh, if looks could kill, I'd have quite the life insurance check coming my way. The Husband was a studly college athlete back in the day, but he was smart enough to quickly add, "well it's not that far FOR YOU." Yeah, much better, hon.

I hauled my exhausted butt back on the road to complete my duathalon and finish a serviceable brick workout. The first half mile was a little wobbly, but the legs eventually came around to hold a suprisingly good pace throughout. Things were feeling pretty strong until I hit the mile mark. Hydration was decent, but I hadn't eaten in hours, and I was feeling a little pre-bonky. 4-26-2 would have to do.

So, duathalon #1 in the books. Sure there was stopping at stop lights and 5 minute transitions, but I won dammit! I may even make a "Returning Champion" t-shirt for the next time I decide to do a workout like this. Just because I can.

Nice workout and award and all, but I'm having trouble imagining how your self-congratulatory victory speech would sound...would you like to enlighten us? =)

So did you get a nifty letter opener in the prize bag?

Awesome. You and I are the same kind of classy. Although I would have been wearing a laurel wreath too. :)

And my husband says stuff like that ALL the time. It drives me nuts!

Will there be a post about the Expo and Packet Pick-up?

Just sign up for the tri, stop eyeing it!!

Great job winning the duathlon. 4-26-2 is really nice. Looks like you are really enjoying the bike.

Wow, you are a running-biking machine. I would have given up about 1/4 of the way into the cotton batting run, for sure.

Can I come to the awards ceremony next time? You, me, a microphone, an a giant #1 foam finger? Epic.

Hilarious - and congrats on 1st place! :) On a serious note, that type of training will totally help you in your 1st tri!! Good luck!

but hey, I don't judge your dirty kids and mangy dogs running through my yard ...

Is it just me, or does this, in fact, sound a trifle judgmental?

Anyroad, congrats on the 1st place finish from me, my dirty kid and my mangy dog.

Fun times. I am a horrible biker, I would not have survived. Way to go winner!

See I couldn't tell if you actually gave yourself an award ceremony, I'm thinking no? You should have though that's a great brick, can't believe you biked 26 miles, now I feel bad for only doing 6..

That was a really good save on the husband's part, great thinking on the spot.

Man, I can only dream of doing a workout that long these days...way to go, ass-kicker! 26 miles is quite the ride for an inaugural duathlon!
Oh, and I hate to be a nitpicker (well, maybe I don't), but RunningLaur had it right the first time - it's duathlon, not duathalon. I guess you rocked it either way, huh.

Congrats! I recommend capping the number of entrants next year (to one person) because clearly the interest will be rampant, and you want to maintain the race quality...(and winning is real nice)

Ha ha ha ha ha ha!

That's terrific. Congrats on not only placing in your age group, but winning overall. Holla, indeed!

I've always wanted to try a duathalon. Actually, I want to try a tri, but I'm a horrid swimmer. I like the motivation from your husband...mine would've said, "Then don't go," and that would've been it for me!

Congratulations. You must be SO proud!

Woo hoo...sweet duathlon! Love the idea of a self-hosted medal ceremony. Now that I am not doing any races, I should try one of those.

way to go!! you won your agegroup too, that's fantastic :) hehe

Wow that is an intense duathlon! Great job!

LOL that is awesome! I host my own races regularly (yeah, lady in the super-tight turquoise top, when I pass you up that hill by the school, we ARE racing, in case you weren't aware). There is a certain spot on my neighbor's walkway that is just sized like a timing mat, so that's my finish line and I run my ass off the last .5 mile to get there. Helps that it's downhill. :-)

I am so impressed with your biking skillz; I think you should definitely sign up for that tri.

I'm behind on blogs...catching up! Did you give yourself a medal for your duathalon win?? You totally deserve one.

HILARIOUS! Great job, success is yours! I hope you wore your medal all day long and told people that you met out and about of your success!

Hey, if you stopped back home to find hubby grilling and STILL got back out? You deserve all the medals and trophies in the world! Congrats on a successful duathalon!!
